Located on the southern edge of the West Bank campus, Hanson Hall will serve as the home for the undergraduate programs of the Carlson School of Management and the Department of Economics. The structure will total five levels, providing 129,000 gross square feet. The Carlson School of Management program will occupy approximately 74 percent of the space, while the Department of Economics will occupy about 26 percent of the space.
A lower level will be home to a small amount of program space and mechanical and electrical service areas. The ground floor of the building is the main student space with nine new classrooms. The second floor will include a business career center and graduate and undergraduate advising. A skyway on the second floor will connect these functions to the existing Carlson School of Management building, creating crossover between the graduate and undergraduate programs. The third and fourth floors will house office space, primarily dedicated to the Department of Economics. The central atrium will serve to tie all of these spaces together, bring light and openness into the building and provide lively circulation space.
The new skyway, spanning 100 feet across 4th Street South, is designed to provide a critical pedestrian link between Hanson Hall and the Carlson School of Management building. The new skyway will extend the already extensive West Bank Gopher Way pedestrian path and will also provide an indoor path from Hanson Hall to the 19th Avenue parking ramp, through the existing Carlson School of Management building.
The image of the existing Carlson School of Management building creates a strong brand for the school and will be extended to the new facility. The exterior of Hanson Hall will take many design cues from the existing Carlson building utilizing a similar palette of brick, glass, and stone employed in a manner consistent with the existing building. Stone and cast stone will be used as an accent material at the windows and entry.
